Detect and monitor heart health.

Understanding EKGs

An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a non-invasive diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of the heart. This test is essential for detecting heart conditions and monitoring heart health. Electrodes are placed on the skin to capture the heart's electrical signals, which are then displayed as waves on a monitor or printed out for analysis. These waves provide valuable information about the heart's rhythm and electrical activity.

What does it diagnose?

Conditions

Arrhythmias

Detects irregular heartbeats, such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia.

Heart Attack

Identifies current or past heart attacks by revealing areas of damaged heart muscle.

Coronary Artery Disease

Shows signs of reduced blood flow to the heart muscle.

Heart Failure

Assesses the heart's ability to pump blood effectively.

Electrolyte Imbalances

Detects abnormalities in blood electrolytes that can affect heart function.

Heart Enlargement

Identifies enlargement of the heart chambers due to conditions like high blood pressure or heart valve disease.

  • Preparation and Consultation:

    • Our staff will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. Generally, no special preparation is needed for an EKG.
    • You will be asked to remove any jewelry and wear a hospital gown to ensure easy access to the chest.
  • During the Procedure:

    • Electrodes will be placed on your chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are connected to the EKG machine through wires.
    • You will be asked to lie still and breathe normally while the machine records your heart's electrical activity. The procedure is painless and typically takes about 10 minutes.

  • Post-Procedure and Follow-Up:

    • After the EKG, our cardiologists will review the results and provide a detailed report.
    • Results are typically available promptly, and you will be scheduled for a follow-up appointment to discuss the findings.
    • Our team will explain the results, answer any questions, and provide recommendations for further tests or treatments if necessary.
