Portable Ultrasound: Diagnostic Imaging That Comes to the Bedside

Big Sky Imaging · July 10, 2026

Ultrasound is one of the most versatile tools in diagnostic imaging, and it happens to travel well. Because the equipment is compact and does not require a fixed room full of shielding, ultrasound is a natural fit for imaging that comes to the patient. For providers and facilities across Montana and Wyoming, portable ultrasound means a study that used to require a trip can now happen right where the patient already is.

What portable ultrasound is

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of the soft tissues and structures inside the body. There is no radiation involved, which is one reason it is used so widely. Portable ultrasound is simply that same technology packaged so a trained technician can carry it to a clinic exam room, a facility, or a patient's home and perform the study on site. The images are produced during the visit and then sent on for interpretation. The experience for the patient is quiet, non-invasive, and typically comfortable.

Common reasons providers order it

Providers reach for ultrasound in a wide range of situations because it gives a clear look at soft tissue and blood flow without radiation. It is commonly ordered to examine the abdomen, to evaluate the vascular system, and to look at soft-tissue areas of concern, among many other uses. We will leave the clinical decisions where they belong, with the ordering provider, since the right study for a given patient depends on the full picture only that provider has. What we can say is that when ultrasound is the right call, we can bring it to the patient.

How Big Sky brings it to you

Our model is built around meeting patients where they are. A technician travels to the clinic, facility, or home with portable equipment and completes the study on site. For clinics, that can mean adding ultrasound capacity without buying and maintaining your own machine. For skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, and home-bound patients, it means the study happens without arranging transport for someone who is difficult to move. Patients who prefer to travel are also welcome at our regional clinics. Ultrasound availability follows our service matrix, so a quick call confirms what we can deliver in your area before you order.

Reads by Rapid Radiology

Capturing good images is only half the job. After the study, the images go to our teleradiology partner, Rapid Radiology, for interpretation by their radiologists. That is what turns a set of pictures into a report a provider can act on. This split lets our technicians focus on getting quality images at the bedside while the reading is handled by a dedicated interpretation team, so you get a professional read without the study ever leaving your community for the imaging itself.

Ordering an ultrasound

Getting a portable ultrasound scheduled works like the rest of what we do. A provider's order is always required, and once it is placed with us online or by phone, our team confirms the details, schedules the visit, and dispatches a technician in your region. Cash pay is accepted, and Medicare and Medicaid are accepted as well, so scheduling does not have to wait on authorization paperwork. If you have a patient who would be better served by imaging that comes to them, reach out and we will help you get an ultrasound on the calendar.
