What to put on an order.
None of this is bureaucracy. Every item below is something that, when it is missing, costs your patient a day while we call you back for it.
The essentials
- Patient name, date of birth, and a number that reaches them
- The exam, or the CPT code from our order form
- The clinical indication or ICD-10. The most common gap, and the one that delays the read
- Where the patient is: clinic, home, facility, room number
- Ordering provider signature and a callback number
Tell us in the same breath
- Urgency. We flag it rather than guess
- Mobility, isolation status, or anything that changes how we approach the visit
- Whether prior imaging exists, so the radiologist can compare
- Anyone else who should receive the report
- Whether the patient is self-pay, so we can quote before the visit
Ultrasound prep varies by study. Abdominal and gallbladder usually need fasting; pelvic often needs a full bladder; vascular, thyroid and soft tissue need none. We tell the patient what applies when we schedule, so you do not have to.

Things worth knowing before you refer.
What we do not do
No MRI, CT, mammography or DEXA. If the order calls for one of those we will say so rather than take the referral. Plenty of questions people assume need an MRI are answered sooner by an X-ray or an ultrasound.
Coverage is not uniform
Modality availability varies by market. Cheyenne currently carries X-ray and EKG. We would rather tell you plainly than have you promise a patient something we cannot deliver there.
Self-pay patients
Ultrasound prices are published, by CPT code, with the radiologist's read included. If a patient asks what it costs, you can answer without calling us.
